Movie review: 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days' stuck in idle mode

After the first two films in the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' series based on Jeff Kinney's books, the charm has worn off a bit in 'Dog Days,' about awkward but endearing middle-schooler Greg Heffley as he pursues a girl and tries to keep his dad off his back.

Sometimes the most unassuming kids' movies — the ones that don't work too hard to be artistic or educational or worthy — are the smartest.
